Safety Tips
Rate My Paw connects you with pet owners, product recommendations, and pet service providers around the world. Most interactions are positive, but as with any platform involving strangers, products, and in-person services, it’s smart to take a few precautions.
1. Protecting Your Personal Information
• Avoid sharing your home address, financial details, or government ID numbers in public profiles, reviews, or messages.
• Use the App’s built-in messaging (if available) rather than moving to personal contact details with people you don’t know well.
• Be cautious about how much identifying information you include in pet profiles (e.g., avoid posting your exact home address as your pet’s “location”).
2. Evaluating Products and Services
• Read multiple reviews, not just the star rating — look for patterns rather than a single review.
• Be cautious of listings with only glowing reviews posted in a short time window, which can indicate manipulated ratings.
• Check for licensing, certification, or insurance information for pet service providers (groomers, sitters, trainers, veterinarians) where relevant, and verify independently when possible.
• Prices that seem far below market rate can be a red flag for scams.
3. Meeting Pet Service Providers or Sellers In Person
• Meet in safe, public, or well-lit locations when possible, especially for a first meeting.
• Bring a friend or family member to initial meetings, particularly for services like petsitting, boarding, or purchasing a pet.
• Verify credentials before leaving your pet in someone’s care — ask for references, and check the provider’s rating history and how long they’ve been active on the App.
• Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, cancel or leave.
• Never send money in advance through untraceable methods (e.g., gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency) to someone you haven’t verified.
4. Buying or Adopting Pets
• Be wary of sellers who refuse video calls, in-person visits, or pressure you to pay quickly.
• Ask for veterinary records and, where applicable, verify the pet’s health independently before finalizing a purchase or adoption.
• Be cautious of prices that seem unusually low for a specific breed — this can indicate a scam or an unethical breeding operation.
5. Protecting Your Pet’s Safety
• Verify a pet sitter, walker, or groomer’s experience with your pet’s specific breed or needs before booking.
• Share clear care instructions, emergency contacts, and your vet’s information with any service provider caring for your pet.
• Consider a trial visit or short booking before committing to a longer engagement.
6. Recognizing Scams
Common warning signs include:
• Requests to pay outside the App or through untraceable methods.
• Urgency or pressure (“this offer expires in an hour”).
• Sellers or providers unwilling to verify identity or provide references.
• Reviews that appear copy-pasted or overly generic across multiple listings.
7. Reporting Concerns
If you encounter a suspicious profile, a scam attempt, or unsafe behavior:
1. Do not send money or personal information.
2. Use the in-app “Report” function on the profile or user.
3. If you believe you are in immediate danger or a crime has occurred, contact your local law enforcement first, then report the incident to us at info@ratemypaw.com.
8. Children and Family Safety
If a family member under the minimum required age uses a shared device, supervise their interactions on the App, and avoid letting them arrange in-person meetings related to pet services without an adult present. These tips are general guidance and not a guarantee of safety. Use good judgment, and see our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service for more information.
